Children from higher social strata have been found to produce longer responses to adult speech (McCarthy, 1930), score higher on standardized tests that include measures of grammatical development (Dollaghan et al., 1999), produce more complex utterances in spontaneous speech as toddlers (Arriaga et al., 1998) and at age 5 years (Snow, 1999), and perform significantly better on measures of productive and receptive syntax at age 6 years (Huttenlocher et al., 2002).
