Foucault’s shift from a style of historical research and analysis conceived as “archaeology” to one understood as “genealogy” is also discussed, showing how the history of the present deploys genealogical inquiry and the uncovering of hidden conflicts and contexts as a means of re-valuing the value of contemporary phenomena.

In philosophy, genealogy is a historical technique in which one questions the commonly understood emergence of various philosophical and social beliefs by attempting to account for the scope, breadth or totality of discourse, thus extending the possibility of analysis, as opposed to the Marxist use of the term ideology to explain the totality of historical discourse within the time period in question by focusing on a singular or dominant discourse (ideology).

First, to bring attention to largely neglected sources of inspiration for Foucault’s genealogical approach, which complement those represented by Nietzsche. Second, it seeks to obtain a better understanding of Foucault’s relationship to Marxism, a relationship often portrayed as unambiguously negative.
